This 15-week master-level Design Fundamentals course explores the history, principles, and evolution of design in live production, emphasizing form and function, color theory, and stylistic movements. Students will engage in hands-on workshops, critiques, and collaborative projects, applying design thinking methodologies to craft immersive environments while learning to assemble and lead effective design teams. Through the study of scenic composition, lighting, digital media, and architectural influences, they will gain a deep understanding of aesthetics, storytelling, and audience perception, as well as team roles, collaboration dynamics, and leadership within the design process. The course also delves into the practical application of materials, spatial design, and sustainable practices, examining how different elements influence both artistic vision and functional execution. Concluding with an exploration of emerging trends and evolving industry practices, this course equips students with the critical skills to innovate, adapt, and excel in the dynamic world of live production design.
