Global Women Composers and Songwriters Throughout the Eras

Description

This ensemble features music written by women across the globe who use the musical platform to affect change, raise awareness around social issues, and address overall inequality. The repertoire includes rhythm and blues, rock, world music, and jazz, featuring women trailblazers who left their mark throughout history up until the present day. The ensemble is a collaborative project in which students are invited to share their ideas and take part in the arrangement of music. The repertoire includes such artists as Judy Mowatt (Jamaica), Chiquinha Gonzaga (Brazil), Regina Carter (U.S.), Consuelo Velázquez (Mexico), Joni Mitchell (Canada), Carole King (U.S.), Barbara Thompson (U.K.), and Bessie Smith (U.S.).
