The Roy Hargrove Ensemble

Course Number
ENJZ-422
Description

The Roy Hargrove ensemble will explore the vast repertoire of this legendary trumpeter under the direction of Jacques Schwarz-Bart, who played next to Hargrove in five of his groups and is one of the founding members of the RH Factor. The repertoire will cover songs from Hargrove's jazz, Latin jazz, and soul-jazz bands. Roy Hargrove’s work encompasses all aspects of modern music. It offers the opportunity to find one’s own voice throughout a variety of styles, by developing individual phrasing, tone and expression. Furthermore, Roy Hargrove had the supreme ability to find raw and powerful expression regardless of the complexity of the music. This quest lyricism is part of the apprenticeship cultivated in this ensemble. Finally, a great emphasis is put on developing group chemistry, which is often neglected in an era of one-off gigs and appearances.
