The Self-Accompanying Singer-Songwriter in the Band Setting
This course addresses the special challenges and opportunities of self-accompanying singer-songwriters in arranging for a full band. There is no existing recording to emulate, no artist to copy. We build an arrangement from the ground up, exploring how the arrangement can grow out of your solo arrangement or divert entirely as a fresh treatment. Students give close attention to the arrangement as a tool to aid storytelling, vocal vs. instrumental timbre, and consideration of vocal technical demands and clarity of speech articulation. Students will develop comprehensive band charts of their original songs, along with associated vocabulary so that you are prepared to head into their own rehearsal and performance settings with the tools to realize the vision for your original songs.
