Description

This course provides an in-depth study of the technical and creative aspects of contemporary film score mixing. It is tailored for FILM majors who are looking to refine their skills and knowledge to a professional standard, covering the mastery of modern audio production and mixing tools extensively. Students will be introduced to a broad spectrum of advanced mixing techniques that are crucial for enhancing the emotional and storytelling elements of a film score. They will learn how to use EQ, compression, time-based, and modulation effects, as well as automation, to shape and enhance their mixes for clarity, balanced dynamics, and maximum musical expression. A combination of practical application and theoretical knowledge will ensure that students are well-equipped to meet the industry's demands. 

Spatial placement and immersion are key components of the curriculum, with focus given to effectively using reverb and other spatial effects for the creation of engaging and immersive audio experiences. Students will learn about digital audio theory, gaining insight into the optimization of sound quality and the mastery of audio signal levels. They will also increase their knowledge of advanced audio formats and delivery protocols to ensure that they are able to adeptly navigate post-production environments. 

The course includes topics on 5.1 surround mixing as well, arming students with the techniques necessary to craft spatial and immersive audio environments. Students will examine the intricacies of hybrid score mixing and production, acquiring the skills needed to create dynamic and immersive scores that meet the demands of the modern media scoring industry. The curriculum ensures that students are able to adapt their skillsets for various visual media and film genres through an understanding of genre and medium-specific techniques.
