Description
The Near Eastern Music Ensemble (NEME) explores the diversity of musical styles used in a variety of musical cultures in western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean, including Egyptian, Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese, and Greek. Students will develop the aural skills and theoretical knowledge for improvising characteristically in these styles and for composing idiomatic original works. They will examine the main features that define these styles through performance, analysis, training in microtonal scales and intervals, and work on selections that include simple to complex odd rhythms like 7/8, 9/8, 10/8, 12/8, and more.
