Minor in Jazz Arranging
Students in the Jazz Arranging Minor will acquire the techniques needed to arrange and orchestrate in jazz styles for ensembles of various sizes, ranging from trio to full big band. Required courses within the minor emphasize score analysis and linear and vertical arranging techniques for the most advanced jazz sound. Elective offerings allow students to explore different orchestration processes, stylistic traditions, and more advanced techniques for specific ensembles.
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- arrange in multiple jazz styles for ensembles of varying sizes up to the big band;
- orchestrate effectively for the standard complement of rhythm section, brass, and woodwind instruments (including doubles);
- utilize a substantial vocabulary of advanced modern jazz voicings in arrangements;
- employ effective linear counterpoint in the jazz style; and
- produce professional quality written musical materials (score and parts).
