Music Education resources compiled by the department are located in the Stan Getz Media Center and Library for use by students and faculty of the College. The collection contains books, periodicals, music, recordings, audio equipment, video series, classroom music series, and other teaching resource materials for utilization by students in preparing classroom and rehearsal instruction. Several instructors also have materials at the reserve desk for specific courses. Do not be afraid to ask for help from the library staff.
NAfME Student Chapter
The National Association for Music Education is the professional organization for music teachers and the largest organization of its kind in the world. NAfME members know that they will have all of the support they need to meet the challenges they face each year as they teach in public, private and parochial schools worldwide. Members receive monthly journals that keep them up to date with the latest trends and events affecting music education. In addition to hundreds of publications devoted to music curriculum, lesson plans, teaching techniques and resources, NAfME has developed and published the National Standards for Music Education. Resources are available to provide music educators with the strategies for teaching musical concepts and the means of assessing those lessons. Information is available for advocacy initiatives and current research to aid with the program development, retention and expansion.
The Berklee NAfME Collegiate chapter has regular meetings featuring speakers and activities of particular interest to our members. In addition to the benefits listed above, Collegiate NAfME members have access to specialized events and publications devoted to the interests of music education students. Massachusetts Music Education Association sponsors a statewide organization and events tailored to the needs of collegiate NAfME members and these are included in the collegiate membership. This chapter regularly has students who attend the state wide MMEA Conference as collegiate ambassadors as well as national meetings and conferences such as the National In-service Conference in Nashville and the Advocacy conference in Washington DC. Students can also make connections with other music educators as assistants for festivals and auditions at all grade levels and chaperones for high school district and division events. Collegiate NAfME membership is required of all MUED majors once they have entered ME 211, Elementary Classroom Methods.
